Imago Relationship For Individuals
Imago Relationship Therapy (IRT) teaches that, as children, we had to give up, deny, or disown core parts of our self to fit in with our family, peers and institutions to which we belonged. The IRT model is intended to help us notice, name and reclaim those lost parts of ourselves that were denied and disowned in childhood, so that we can repair and heal the wounds that denial inflicted. It is Imago’s belief that most of our problems are the result of ruptures in our relationships and that, therefore, the repair of those ruptures is best done in relationship.
For this reason, I encourage clients to consider bringing kindred spirits into our sessions to assist in learning the theory and toolkit of the IRT paradigm. In the absence of such relationships, I will use our clinical relationship as a laboratory to learn and practice the IRT model.
Not only can an individual do IRT, but it is a wonderful model to help you learn about yourself, your relationships, and how to deepen your connection to both. For more information about Imago for individuals, please see Harville Hendrix’s book Keeping the Love You Find: A Personal Guide.
